The distinctive landscape of Tuscany flows smoothly over into the green heart of Italy, better known as Umbria. A region with beautiful nature, vast undulating plains and high rugged mountain areas. But Umbria has its own traditions and culture. The cities, which have escaped the increasing progress, contain fantastic art treasures. Authentic cities like
Orvieto, Spoleto, Todi and Perugia are definitely worth a visit.
In terms of nature, this fabulous landscape has a lot to offer. The most common views are the green hills, full of many olive trees and vineyards. But there’s more than that. The lake Trasimeno, the Monti Sibillini and both the Tiber- and the Nera Valley each have their own specific characteristics and attract different enthusiasts.
It does not always have to be grandiose. Many smaller villages in Central Italy have stolen our hearts. The many terracotta-coloured towns are very typical of the region. The colourful Spello, the hidden Montone and the geographical centre Narni are all winners.
Umbria is also known for Majolica Ceramics. Every year this region attracts several collectors who skim the many charming shops. If you are a fan of hand-painted plates, Deruta and Gubbio should definitely be on your planned route.
Italy is, of course, known for its fine wines and Umbria is no exception. The Strada del Sagrantino is located in Montefalco, between Foligno, Assisi and Spoleto. Here you can try one of the better wines from the region: The Sagrantino di Montefalco. Smelling of blackberries and herbs, you can enjoy this glass of red wine any time of day.
But wine is not the only delicacy of this region. Umbria is the largest truffle supplier in Italy. For a memorable holiday you can hunt for the characteristic Umbrian truffle in the gastronomic Norcia, with a dog. The Nero di Norcia is perhaps the most typical product of the region.
Umbria, in the shadow of Tuscany, is a modest and touching splendour! Do you like beautiful architecture, friendly people and exceptional views? Then this is definitely the place for you.
