The Côte d'Azur: discover the Var and Sainte-Maxime

The Var department in the South of France is a popular holiday destination due to its location by the Mediterranean Sea and the beautiful seaside towns that go with it. The coast, or the Côte d'Azur, is known for its beautiful beaches, warm summers and Mediterranean atmosphere. Of course, the glamorous seaside resort of Saint-Tropez immediately comes to mind, where celebrities from all over the world spend their summers in yachts or holiday villas in the hills along the Riviera. Saint-Tropez is definitely worth a visit as it is not without reason that the French town is so popular. But there is so much more to discover in the South of France! Rent a holiday home on the Côte d'Azur and discover what the region has to offer.

1. Sainte-Maxime

Previously, you could read on our blog why we are totally in love with Sainte-Maxime. It is one of the most famous cities of the Côte d'Azur, but compared to other tourist destinations in France, it is quite quiet. Sainte-Maxime is located close to long sandy beaches, where you can enjoy the 300 days of sunshine a year. On the boulevard Promenade Simon Lorière you can stroll along all kinds of trendy boutiques, terraces and restaurants. After a long day of sun and beach, you can enjoy a glass of rosé with a beautiful view. Culture lovers will not be bored in Sainte-Maxime either, where there is no shortage of museums and architecture. Are you on holiday in the south of France with children? Or are there sports fans in your group ? Watersports, amusement parks and all sorts of activities surround Sainte-Maxime so there's a range of great day trips to choose from. Can't wait to get there ? A holiday villa with private pool, a holiday home or a holiday flat in Sainte-Maxime is no problem, there is something for everyone. View our selection of holiday homes in the Côte d'Azur for your stay near Sainte-Maxime.

2. Grimaud

Grimaud is an old fortified town in the Côte d'Azur and is located between Sainte-Maxime and Saint-Tropez. The port of Grimaud is also called the Venice of France. The winding waterways make the port extra large, and it really is part of the village. You can explore Port Grimaud from a boat and many families have a boat in front of their house. The atmosphere is really unique. You can make a day trip from Sainte-Maxime, Nice or Saint-Tropez to Port Grimaud, even by boat! On Sundays, the market takes over the entire centre, creating a lot of fun as you browse among the typical delicacies of southern France.

3. Gassin

Gassin is one of the most beautiful villages in the Var. It is located in the Massif des Maures, between Hyères, Sainte-Maxime and Saint-Tropez. The Massif des Maures is a small mountain range in the south of France where a lot has happened over the centuries. Traces of human activity have been found dating back to prehistoric times. The village of Gassin itself was first mentioned in the 13th century. The historical character of Gassin has always been well preserved, making it truly picturesque. Gassin is so close to Saint-Tropez that you can perfectly combine your visit with an afternoon at the beach.

4. Les Issambres

Les Issambres is located north of Sainte-Maxime and is a haven of peace in the south of France. Les Issambres is a seaside resort with about 8 km of beaches and bays that lie just outside the cities. Are you staying in a holiday home or villa on the Côte d'Azur? Be sure to take the time to go to the beach in Les Issambres. You can enjoy all the delicacies of the south of France in the local restaurants or try a sportive activity such as diving or cycling.

5. Cogolin

Cogolin is a village in the Var region which, like Grimaud, is located a few kilometres from the coast and thus the port (Port Cogolin). The name Cogolin probably comes from the word 'cougoul', which would mean small hill. This may well be true: on the hill where the village is situated, there used to be a castle of which only the tower remains. Cogolin is situated next to the slightly more famous Grimaud, but the two villages are comparable in atmosphere and cosiness. Port Cogolin is much less crowded, but shops, restaurants and terraces provide the real southern French holiday atmosphere that is typical of a port village. Moreover, there is a nice beach not much further away, where you can also practice water sports.

For a holiday feeling in France, the Côte d'Azur is the right place.
