6 sights in Marrakech not to be missed.

Going on holiday is the best way to leave everyday life behind you. Immerse yourself in new surroundings and a whirlwind of impressions in Marrakech. It is a wonderful holiday destination if you want to make an original trip outside the familiar Europe, without having to travel halfway across the planet. A 3.5-hour flight will take you to the Moroccan metropolis, where the glowing colours and fragrant scents will make you feel as if you have travelled around the world. Marrakech is bursting with sights that you can put on your bucket list to soak up the atmosphere of North Africa. Did you know that Cap has a beautiful dream villa on offer for a true 1001-nights experience? Check out Dar Jenna, a holiday villa with pool near Marrakech. Here you can enjoy entire days undisturbed with your family or romantically as a couple, but the sights in Marrakech are also worth a visit.

Below are the 6 must-see attractions in Marrakech.

1. The red city, Medina

The centre of Marrakech is a bustling place full of stalls, music, people, animals and activity. You can get lost for hours in the Medina, the famous maze of streets and alleys full of stalls. Taste all the delicacies and shop for the most beautiful souvenirs and accessories. Your senses are in for a treat in the city centre with its red-tinted facades, colourful merchandise and aromas of spices. The heart of the bustle is the famous Jemaa el Fna square. It is always crowded, and in the evening the atmosphere turns into a party: food stalls and lights create an unprecedented atmosphere. Unfortunately, there are also many animals like snakes and monkeys that are displayed for entertainment, but leave them alone, because animal abuse can also look sweet.

2. Day trip to the desert - Sahara

Are you staying in a holiday home in Marrakesh? Then a trip to the desert is definitely a must! From Marrakech you can plan a tour to the Sahara. There are many organisations that offer different excursions, but it is a unique experience to go and stay in the desert for a few days. This will also give you more time to visit the beautiful sights such as Aït-Ben-Hadou and the Dadès Gorge. There are also other excursions on offer that will make for unforgettable memories! What about driving quads? Or, more authentically, riding camels? Hilarious and beautiful moments are guaranteed, especially since this type of activity can only be done here!

3. Jardin Majorelle and Jardin Secret

Jardin Majorelle, or the Majorelle Garden, is one of the most popular attractions in Marrakech and not without reason. The garden is also known as Yves-Saint-Laurent's garden. The fashion designer bought the property in the 1980s together with his partner Pierre Bergé from Jacques Majorelle, who designed the architectural artwork, and they opened it to visitors. The garden seems to be a hidden oasis, because from the outside you would not know that there is so much beauty hiding behind the walls and behind the not very impressive entrance. Once inside, however, you will be overwhelmed by a wealth of cacti, exotic plant species, birds and you can even find toads and tortoises. The pond and the Berber Museum are the highlights: bright blue and yellow they contrast with the green surroundings. It is an aesthetic and very Moroccan scene.

A little less known, but also worthwhile, is the Jardin Secret. There are far fewer tourists here, so you can better enjoy the calming effect of the beautifully maintained Islamic garden. The Jardin Secret is laid out in the typical symmetrical style with a beautiful pond in the middle.

4. Essaouira

Just like an excursion to the Sahara, you can also book a day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech. You can go there by public transport as well, but the bus only runs a few times a day so you don't want to miss it! The beautiful white and blue port city is about 2.5 hours drive west of Marrakech. Essaouira is a breath of fresh air compared to Marrakech, the relaxed atmosphere makes it great for strolling around. You can visit all the main attractions of Essaouira in one day and also enjoy the pleasant atmosphere. In the harbour there are colourful boats and an extensive fish market where you can enjoy a huge range of fresh fish all day long. The walled centre, the Essaouira medina, is full of shops, restaurants and street musicians. There is also a traditional souk in a traffic-free street where you can shop for fresh produce and all sorts of other things. The beach is also great to visit and offers a bit of refreshment in the hot summer sun. Not a fan of all that sand? You can always freshen up in your holiday home in Marrakech with private swimming pool.

5. Bahia Palace

The Bahia Palace is one of the most impressive sights in Marrakech. The 8000 square metre palace and its beautifully landscaped gardens is a nineteenth century masterpiece that was the most luxurious and the largest palace in Morocco at the time of construction. The typical tiles, door arches and millions of details that you can admire here give it a very romantic feel. The 1001 nights atmosphere is definitely present here. If you wander through Marrakech, the Bahia Palace is a real must visit.

6. El Badi Palace

The El Badi Palace is much older than the Bahia Palace and dates back to the 16th century. It was built for King Amad I al-Mansur and was a megalomaniac project. The design was heavily influenced by that of the Alhambra in Granada and originally there would have been around 360 rooms with a huge courtyard and a large pond. Unfortunately, the El Badi Palace has not withstood the test of time so well, but it is nonetheless an interesting sight to see. The ruin is still impressive to say the least when viewed from the outside or walking around the former courtyard.
