The 8 best day trips from Meyrannes

Meyrannes is a quiet village in the south of France, in Languedoc-Roussillon, which is at the crossroads of so many beautiful destinations that we can't possibly list them all. Enjoy your villa with private pool, but please note that you are close to many towns and places to visit. From the most important Roman cities in France, to sleepy villages under the Provençal sun, to local markets and beaches further away, you will not be bored for a moment, all generations included!

Meyrannes is a village in the Gard region of southern France, located in the Cévennes. Are you looking for a holiday house in this magnificent natural setting? Meyrannes
enjoys an exceptional natural heritage called the Natura 2000 site, encompassing the high valleys of the Cèze and Luech. This European designation refers to a special area of conservation and protection, and you will see beavers and otters for example. Meyrannes is part of the Cevennes National Park and UNESCO has recognised the area as a biosphere reserve, home to more than 2400 animal species and over 2300 plant species. You will discover an ecological zone with fabulous flora and fauna, where you can take deep breaths of fresh air!

In addition to relaxing in your holiday house with a private pool in the beautiful Mediterranean climate, Meyrannes is a starting point for many excursions in this beautiful region.

Uzès

Located 45km from Meyrannes, discover the First Duchy of France (1632). This town is a real gem, with its old streets, terraces and charming shops. Choose Wednesdays to enjoy their typical Provencal market.

Continue your journey to the Pont du Gard, some 15km away.

Pont du Gard

This is the highest Roman aqueduct listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional preservation, historical importance and architecture. You've probably seen a photo of this bridge somewhere, and seeing it in front of you is impressive. After visiting the bridge, take a walk along the Gardon and bathe in its cool, clear waters. You can also pass under the bridge in a canoe or kayak.

There are countless possibilities to make this a fun day out.

Nîmes

The Roman ruins in Nîmes are well worth a visit, and the city boasts the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world, better than the Colosseum in Rome! Stroll through the ancient streets and enjoy the sleepy atmosphere of this southern French town. Like all these charming cities, Nîmes offers cafés, terraces and shops to enhance your day.

Continue to Arles, which is about an hour away.

Arles

In the same spirit as Nîmes, Arles is a charming town in the south of France, steeped in history. It also has Roman ruins and a Van Gogh museum, where the artist produced no less than 300 works. You are at the gateway to the Camargue Regional Park, which offers you its own special world. Its dunes, ponds, rice fields, salt marshes, and don't forget to take beautiful photos in the exceptional light of the region. From migratory birds to Camargue horses and bulls, it is a complete change of scenery.

Let's go back to Meyrannes where you can relax in your holiday house and pool, then we’ll take a different route.

Orange

Further north and some 80km from Meyrannes, you will find Orange. This city, also called the "City of Princes", also has many Roman monuments listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. Located in the Vaucluse valley, you can enjoy the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is only 15 minutes away!

Avignon

If you’re up for it, don't hesitate. The road is a little longer, count 1h30 to arrive from Meyrannes to Avignon, but this city is not to be missed: its Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace), its avenues, its festival, there is no lack of animation, and not forgetting its unfinished bridge. Another city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its historical remains. In addition, Avignon is a university town, full of young people and cafe-bars, with a festive atmosphere in all seasons.

Since you're on the road, add another 45 minutes and drive to Les Baux-de-Provence.

Baux-de-Provence

Another beautiful village, very touristy, visited by more than 1.5 million visitors per year. The village is perched on top of a rocky outcrop, offering not only historical relics but also superb views of the natural surroundings, including the Massif des Alpilles, the Camargue and its vineyards. Stroll through the village centre, visiting the remains of the castle and its dungeon, as well as the troglodyte houses.

Montpellier

This is the last destination we recommend from Meyrannes, and the furthest away. It's a 2-hour drive to get there, but it's certainly worth the detour. A lively and attractive university city on the Mediterranean Sea with beautiful architecture, historic ruins and plenty to do. Visit the Arc de Triomphe and then stroll along the Peyrou promenade, not forgetting the old town centre and its charming old-fashioned streets. The beaches are also very beautiful, so make the most of it!

Apart from these cultural suggestions, nature in the region is great. Discover the cycle paths called "voies vertes" (green paths), and the one that starts in the centre of Gagnières is 60km long. Gagnières is 10 minutes from Meyrannes.

For golfers, there are 18-hole courses in Nîmes and Arles.

Visit Barjac, classified as a "Village of Character in the Gard", which will seduce you with its natural charm and its "Tuscan" gardens.

Some 20 minutes away from Barjac, at Saint-Ambiorix, rent a canoe or a kayak at Cap Canoe to fully enjoy the Gorges de la Cèze.

And close to Meyrannes, less than 10 minutes away, you will find the Grotte de Cocalière, dating back to over 35 million years and still in formation, reputed one of the most beautiful caves in France.

In Saint-Ambiorix, you will find a choice of supermarkets (Intermarché, Carrefour, Lidl) about 10km from the house, as well as a bakery (4km), and another in Molière-sur-Cèze (3km).

Relax in your holiday home by the pool, or explore the surrounding area, your holiday in any season will be filled of great memories!
