What to do in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is the very essence of everything that makes us feel that Provence is simply a dreamy place for a holiday. It concentrates that whole slow, warm and friendly atmosphere, there are markets where people call out in their cheery Provençal accent for you to come and taste juicy fruits and delicious local delicacies. Nature is preserved, you can go on hikes and breathe in the fresh air. There is a long list of reasons why many of our holiday houses are in this area, mainly because you can only love Provence.

Parc Naturel des Alpilles

Rent a holiday house with a swimming pool in the area in or around Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and you will find there is a multitude of things to do. The Parc Naturel des Alpilles offers nature trails and hikes, in the course of which you will see birds of prey such as eagles and falcons, as well as owls and farm animals in the petting zoo which is always a big hit with children. Stop to cool off in the lake and enjoy canoeing and kayaking along the waterways.

Wine-tasting

A glass of wine with the barbecue by your private swimming pool? By all means! And why not spend an afternoon at one of the many vineyards that offer wine-tasting to better choose your local wine? Add the local delicacies that you bought at the market, and there’s dinner!

To the market

The local market in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is an institution. It is reputed as one of the most beautiful markets in Provence and boasts a charming atmosphere, delicious local tapenades, fresh fruit and vegetables, and local handicraft such as natural soap. Don’t miss it!

Day trip

Now let’s take the car and drive out some more. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence enjoys a fabulous location at the heart of Provence, and here are a few ideas for a day out. Les Baux-de-Provence is a town that is a fifteen-minute drive away, classified among the Plus Beaux Villages de France – most beautiful villages in France. Avignon and its historical Palais des Papes – Palace of the Popes – is about half an hour away. It enjoys a festival of the arts throughout July. Arles is also a thirty-minute drive away, with its fabulous Roman ruins and arena.

Tanning on the beach

The closest beach is an hour away, at Martigues. This is a beautiful sandy beach that the family will enjoy for a day, before heading back to the luxury of your villa with a private swimming pool and garden. Crowds are only good in small doses.

Vincent Van Gogh

A special mention to the great artist Vincent Van Gogh, who settled in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence for a year and produced some of his most famous paintings. There is the Van Gogh Trail that will take you across the landscapes that inspired him, amidst sunflowers and lavender fields. Need we say more?

We have an extensive offer in this beautiful area, in and around Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. However, if this is not really what you are after, you could try a more natural holiday in an agriturismo in Tuscany, or a real beach holiday on the Costa del Sol!
