Must do: Car holiday to the most beautiful places at the Costa Brava

If you depart from Belgium, a car holiday is perfectly possible. However, you'd better be well prepared by taking the necessary precautions. Make sure your insurances are in order, have your car checked and think well about what you take with you. It is also important to consider which countries you will be travelling through on your route. For Austria and Switzerland you need a vignette and don't forget a warning triangle, fluorescent jackets and a breathalyser, which are compulsory in France. If necessary, make a checklist before you leave. Have you ticked everything? Then you are ready to leave!

It depends on your party and your preferences which stops you make when you cross France, Luxembourg or Switzerland. A road trip through Europe gives you complete freedom and you can combine several countries in one holiday. How about a holiday home in the Dordogne or a holiday home in Provence as a stopover in France to ease your journey?

Why Spain?

Spain is a fantastic destination and not without reason has been the favourite holiday country of many for many years. The summer sun and wonderful holiday atmosphere that prevails there are the ultimate reward after a long journey. But at the same time you can cross Europe by car without necessarily having to plan an uncomfortably long drive. At Cap we have a large selection of holiday homes in Spain in different regions that can serve as the final destination of your journey. If you want to go on holiday by car with a guaranteed relaxing and sunny stay, we already have one big favourite.

Where to go?

The first region you enter when arriving in Spain is the Costa Brava. The Catalan region is therefore ideal if you don't want to be on the road too long. Depending on where you have booked your holiday accommodation in the Costa Brava, it will take you about 12 hours.

Our favourite villages on the Costa Brava are Pals, l'Estartit and l'Escala. Here you will find the perfect mix of history, culture and fun. Pals is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. The well-preserved medieval centre is situated on a hill and looks out over the countryside. The village extends to the coast and Platja de Pals is a beautiful sandy beach with natural surroundings. Next door is l'Estartit, where there is a bit more tourism at the cosy harbour. In l'Estartit you will also find a rich natural and historical heritage as well as cosy terraces and bars in abundance. The beautiful coastal town of l'Escala also has beautiful beaches and a cosy village centre. With a nice holiday home with pool on the Costa Brava near Pals, l'Estartit and l'Escala, you are in the right place. Moreover, the region has much more to offer, so a longer stay is definitely recommended.

Discovering the region

Finally settled at your final destination, but that does not mean you should sit still! With the car you have all the freedom you need to discover the region. From your holiday home in the Costa Brava there are plenty of possibilities to plan trips to the nicest sights, the prettiest villages and the best beaches.

These are the 5 best excursions at the Costa Brava:

● Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar is famous for looking like a postcard. From the beautiful sandy beach you look straight into the medieval castle, surrounded by old city walls with battlements and watchtowers. Tossa de Mar is the last fortified village of the Costa Brava, which creates a unique and very cosy atmosphere in the streets of the centre. Many artists have been inspired by what is known as the most beautiful coastline in Spain and many of these works can be admired in the town museum now housed in Palau del Batle. Like other pretty coastal villages, it can get pretty busy here in the summer and the beach can soon become crowded. So feel free to jump in the car and enjoy your holiday home with swimming pool at the Costa Brava, what a luxury!

● Barcelona

Barcelona is perhaps the most popular city break destination these days and we know very well why! A day of shopping, admiring unique architecture, sunbathing on the beach or enjoying good food? It is all possible here. With a holiday home on the Costa Brava, you can reach Barcelona in an hour and a half's drive. So you can enjoy all the fun that the city has to offer and then return to your oasis on the coast.

● Cadaqués

On the rocky coast on the Cap de Creus peninsula, lies one of the most beautiful coastal towns of the Costa Brava. Cadaques is very recognisable thanks to its white-painted houses and the majestic white church, Eglésia de Santa Maria. The town has an exclusive atmosphere because it was almost completely closed off until the 20th century due to its remote location. Here, you can enjoy magnificent views of the bay and have a drink in a beautiful photogenic setting.

● Girona

Girona, or Gerona, is often skipped by tourists who would rather visit Barcelona. However, the city has an atmosphere and history all of its own, making it well worth a visit. There are many historical and architectural attractions such as the Eiffel bridge and the cathedral. Don't miss the old Jewish neighbourhood, which is known for being beautiful and well preserved. Even if you visit Girona in one day, you will find many interesting sights here.

● Figueres

Figueres is the birthplace of two Catalan or even Spanish icons: the surrealist painter Dali and the folk dance the Sardana. The Dali museum is therefore in its place and attracts millions of visitors every year who want to see the unique experience with their own eyes. However, the town of Figueres itself is also very pleasant and definitely worth a visit.
